Ellie Playing Pearl Jam’s “Future Days” On The Guitar In The Last Of Us Season 2 Heavily Connects To Joel

It’s The First Song That Joel Played For Ellie When They Got To Jackson

The song that Ellie starts to play in the theater inThe Last of Usseason 2 , sequence 5 isPearl Jam ’s “ Future Days . ”This song has a elusive connection within the TV show — “ Future Days ” was the title of the season 2 premiere episode — butit has a much self-aggrandising and much rich association to the video game . The Last of Us Part IIopens with Joel picking up a guitar to give to Ellie so he can fulfill his hope to teach her how to play .

Every time Ellie picks up a guitar , she plays the opening chords of “ Future Days ” and retrieve of Joel .

“ Future Day ” is the first Sung Joel plays for Ellie when he drops off the guitar . It becomesa recurring motive throughout the game . Every metre Ellie picks up a guitar , she recreate the opening chord of “ Future Days ” andthinks of Joel . That ’s why Ellie gets so distressing and melancholic when she play the song on stagecoach at the theater . Those chord and those language remind her of Joel , and remind her that she ’s lose him .

Why Ellie Got So Upset When Playing Guitar On The Stage In The Last Of Us Season 2 Episode 5-2

“ Future day ” come out in 2013 , so it technically should n’t exist inThe Last of UsTV show ’s timeline , but it tie in so perfectly with the report ’s themes that the producer decided to use it anyway .

The lyric of “ Future Days ” necktie in closely with the themesofThe Last of Us Part II(and , by extension , The Last of Usseason 2 ) . The opening telephone line sums it up dead : “ If I ever were to lose you , I ’d sure enough lose myself . ” When Joel first sang those words to Ellie , he was show how much she signify to him — and , in a pernicious way , why he refuse to let the Fireflies kill herto create a cure . When Ellie whistle it , she ’s mull on miss Joel and , in the pitiless pursuit of revenge , lose herself .

The Reminder Of Joel Is Too Painful

Eversince Joel died , Ellie has been repressing her opinion and holding back a levelheaded grieve appendage . She ’s so fixated on find Abby and vote out her — often at the expense of the masses she sleep together — because she thinks that ’ll make her feel better . Much like Abby , Ellie believe that avenge her previous Father-God will comfort the pain of his death . Until then , she ca n’t hold to talk about Joel or even intend about him for too long . That ’s why she ca n’t make it through much of “ Future Days ” before buzz off worried .

I ’ve been love The Last of Us season 2 ’s adaption of Ellie and Dina ’s relationship , but I ca n’t conceive how much it changed their theater scene .

As Ellie plays the first couplet of bars of “ Future Days , ” her sadness seems to quickly turn to ire . She ’s not processing her grief in a healthy means — she ’s focusing it entirely on her desire for vengeance — and it ’ll end up chipping away at her soul . This brief moment inThe Last of Usseason 2 , instalment 5 might not seem like a big lot , but make no error : it is a big deal .
