Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi

The scene between Luke Skywalker and the Force ghost of Yoda was one of the best inStar war : The Last Jedi , butThe Rise of Skywalkermisses ( and undoes ) much of what made it so great . Yoda ’s return to the Skywalker saga , over 30 twelvemonth after his death inReturn of the Jedi , was n’t just a surprise goody for sports fan inThe Last Jedi , but also a polar minute in the sequel trilogy ’s in-between chapter . With Luke at a modest point , it ’s Yoda who once again provides the Jedi with some Good Book of wiseness , explain that"the nifty instructor , failure is"and that masters are what students"grow beyond " . It ’s a touching fit that reflects on both of their journeys , and the themes of the franchise as a whole .

There ’s no seat for Yoda inStar war : The ascension of Skywalker , but after his expiry in the late flick it’sLuke Skywalker who fill the Force ghost rolethis metre around . Once again set on Ahch - To , the Force ghost of Luke interact with Rey . He catches the lightsaber she attempts to throw away , and ultimately give way her the boost ( and X - fender ) needed to go and destruct Palpatine for goodness . While the two scenes partake in Force ghosts and the setting , however , the second one takes away a lot of the first ’s power .

InThe Last Jedi , Luke and Yoda ’s conversationspeaks to the exponent of unsuccessful person - that it is a great tool for the next generation , because they can learn from those mistakes . Thus , the growing beyond means their students do not repeat the mistakes of their master ; that they find a new way forward . It ’s an emotional , thematically rich second that connects to the intact saga - both Yoda and Luke have experienced their own moments of great failure - butThe Rise of Skywalkerdoesn’t build on it . When Rey finds Luke on Ahch - To , he render her a lightsaber and a ship , sending her off to destroy Palpatine . That does n’t suggest anyone learning from their failures , but plainly doing something that has already been done .

There ’s little here to show that Rey is rise beyond Luke , or that either are learning from failures of the past . After all , Palpatine was shoot down before , and there ’s no guarantee of Rey doing anything other than here . It ’s not so much that Luke wills Rey back into the fight - after all , The Last Jediitself finish with him becoming the torpedo of the Rebellion once again - but that it ostensibly throws off the deeper impact of the Luke / Yoda scene in favour ofhanding Rey a fresh lightsaberand have her be the latest Jedi to face down Palpatine . It usher Luke learning from his failure of hiding away , but it does n’t look at the wider context of that scene : of the failure of Yoda ,   or the failure of the Jedi Order as a whole .

In the end , Rey does succeed in get the better of Palpatine , but it ’s nonetheless hard to know what has really changed - what ’s to break off Palpatine , or some new threat , emerging once again ? And what will the Jedi to otherwise to preclude it?The Last Jedi ’s Luke / Yoda scenewas a saturated dose of one of its core message - the misunderstood idea of rent the past die . Really , whatThe Last Jedisays is to not hold on so blindly to the past ; to respect it , but also acknowledge the defect and get word from the failures . Luke ’s arc inThe Last Jedisuggests that Rey could feel a raw direction forward , that rejects the dogma of the Jedi and the duality of light and dark for something new and more balanced , but that ’s not pay out inThe Rise of Skywalker . It ’s possible Rey may do that , but it ’s far from a guaranteed thing . “The slap-up instructor , failure is,“Yoda says . The Rise of Skywalkerdidn’t learn that object lesson , as while Rian Johnson went for the theme ofStar war , J.J. Abrams   was more focussed on the iconography .
