Wilhuff Tarkin made his first appearance in the filmStar Wars : A New Hopewhere he was also killed as a solution of the Death Star ’s demolition . While his presence is short lived in the films , his history is vast within the deep Star Wars lore . Tarkin was a pol , beaurocrat , and military police officer whose vocation span from the meter of the Republic through the Clone Wars and then lastly to the years of the Galactic Civil War . The Grand Moff was subservient in the instauration andusage of the Death Staras he believe that its infrangible power would keep star systems across the coltsfoot in personal line of credit for fear of being obliterated in an instant . While his role in the Death Star examine that he is a terrific fiend , that is n’t the grounds he is more dangerous than Vader .

InStar Wars#23 by Charles Soule and Ramon Rosanas , the integrality of the Rebel Fleet is go away up against a single Star Destroyer above a satellite where the Rebels have set up up a base of operation . While it seems as though the Rebels should be able to take out the imperial ship , the somebody in statement of that finicky Star Destroyer , Commander Zahra , studied under Grand Moff Tarkin himself and mastered the tactical genius he imparted . If not for the infiltrators , the Rebels would have been blot out and the Empire may have actually won the war , and Commander Zahra carried out her surgical end of the Rebel fleet in the name of her wise man , Wilhuff Tarkin .
This issue takes place after the events ofStar Wars : A New Hope , so at this point the Death Star is destroyed , Tarkin is utter , and the Rebels have more steam than ever before . It is for those reasons that Zahra is so hellbent on annihilate the Rebels in a single battle , and the mortal who inspired her to do so was Tarkin himself . Unlike Darth Vader , Tarkin actually had people who care about him and looked up to him as a leader . Tarkin only inspired fear in his enemies , but bolster up those beneath him to reach the full extent of their capabilities , which would then be used to serve the Empire – with Zahra being a premier instance . Even the ship Zahra commands is named Tarkin ’s Will in honor of her wise man , a point Zahra brings up in this issue while cod her scout group to defeat every Rebel they run across , something they very nearly succeed in accomplishing .
Darth Vader is too terrifying on his own merit , even among other valued member of the Empire . As shown in the original trilogy , Vader will drink down those who are under him just for making a misunderstanding or speaking out of turn . His villainous actions do not inspire commitment , as anyone who follows Vader is only doing so out of fear . Tarkin , however , does inspire loyalty , so much so that his protégé almost defeats the intact Rebel Alliance in his name . Tarkin’slasting bequest in theStar Warsuniverse , peculiarly within the ranks of the Empire , makes him far more unsafe to the Rebels thanDarth Vader .
