Screen Rant : Congrats on the film . I have to say , I did watch it twice in a row .
Pierre Perifel : Oh my gosh , thank you so much . I really apprise it .
The animation style is just unbelievable . Can you tell me about finding that ?
Pierre Perifel : Absolutely . This is a style that is something that I ’ve been wanting to see on American aliveness for quite a while now . Probably because I grew up with it when I was a kid .
But it is really funny , because it ’s kind of becoming a bit of a trend in France , honestly . Not the movie , but that manner of brio for the last few class , really . It ’s kind of the intersection of very classic , traditional animation production that we ’ve had in France , but also a hatful of anime influence that has been ill-tempered - pollinating each other . That ’s something that is not as common to see in the animation manufacture in the US , and I really want to see that . The illusion was to get that bang here to the squad , so that they can reproduce it .
Of of course , our movie ’s an version of all this , because mass have their own reflexes , and we have our own word of mouth , and it ’s CG and so many things . But that ’s where it ’s coming from : Ernest & Celestine , and you have The Big Bad Fox , and you haveLupin , andThe Castle of Cagliostro . Then you have Sherlock Hound , and animes , Korean [ animation ] , and all of that . All of that has been influencing that style .
I had an animator called Jorge Capote , who has worked in 2D living and is a wizardry . He was there to help me out , because he really knows that panache . And JP Sans , who ’s the brain of animation together . They were trying to just really ensure that they could instruct the crew and just eviscerate over every shot , just to ensure it outfit in that dash .
What intake beyond the playscript do you feel were present in this movie ?
Pierre Perifel : A mickle of inspiration from the heist flick , like classic house movies - that pocket billiards ofThe Italian Job , Snatch , andLock , Stock [ And Two Smoking Barrels ] .
And obviouslyOcean ’s 11 ; the Ocean franchise , really , and Soderbergh films , which I ’m just such a sucker for and big lover of .
But also , I believe the very first influence for me was Quentin Tarantino films and cinema . And it really came out of the looking of that cover . The cover of the first book , The Bad Guys , is really those brute in black suit , and they look like gangster . And to me , it wasReservoir Dogs . I ’m like , " Oh my God , this is perfect . brute , gangster , driving cars , robbing banks , money flying - it was precisely that . " I would figure that right away , and so that [ was ] Reservoir Dogs meets fun brio .
Obviously , Tarantino is very hard to accommodate for children , for so many reasons . And therefore , it kind of became more like the heist star and Ocean ’s 11 , and all of those movies that I also love . It kind of became that , and chip of Mission Impossible , and a bite of breaking the fourth wall likeDeadpoolandFleabag . And obviouslyMy Fair Lady , when it ’s all the education collage . All of these were in there , but those are kind of the bighearted influence , for certain .
I do n’t have it away if you ’re thinking about this at this point , but let ’s say this movie blows up . Everybody roll in the hay it . Everybody wants more . Do you think there ’s space for a sequel , and is that something that you ’ve think about ?
Pierre Perifel : If you think that there ’s 20 Word that are come out in the book series , there ’s no agency there ’s no space for a sequel . That is in spades something to do , and of grade , we ’re thinking about it . Of course , we require to see those characters be there again , and follow back . candidly , I just enjoy the ride with them so much myself , bringing them to life - and I see my children ’s or friends of my children ’s response to this and want more , and really need to enter with these characters .
Because you really devolve in love with them , I think , during this picture show . You want to see them and what ’s next . Yeah , we ’re thinking about it . Nothing ’s done . We do n’t know . But , in a way , finger crossed . You kind of promise .
You mention the cast , and they ’re incredible . How much influence did they have on the reference ? Were they ad libbing ? I know there was a birdsong by Anthony Ramos that got put into the film .
Pierre Perifel : Yeah , they had an incredible , vast influence on each of these characters . I mean , you have to retrieve , those are incredible gift . They are so sinewy and so strong that they defined their part almost on the first day , reading for us . Sam and Awkwafina and just Alex Borstein - every single one of them would be there and just convey up the reference ; just lend them to life .
And once you find out them do it you ’re like , " Oh my god , that ’s the character . " You ca n’t hear anything else , you know ? And because we first did our storyboards with scratch voices - stand - in voices , which are great - then when you hear the real deal , it ’s like , " Oh my God , done . This is him . This is Wolf . This is Tarantula . This is Shark . "
They brought so much to the point where we rewrote some line for them to really equate their voice and their act style . And candidly , we managed to put down them together , so that there ’d really be some kind of extemporization and some kind of raillery between them , and make certain that the flow of the read was constitutional and matte up right .
I think they had a blast . I had definitely had a clap , and it ’s such a great casting .
