The Old Guard
Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernandez are bringing their religious cult classical laughable book , The Old Guard , to resilient - natural action biography through Netflix . The film , which unload on July 10 , explore the down incline to immortality through a radical of mercenaries who ca n’t seem to drop dead . drawing card of the coterie Andy ( Charlize Theron ) land in the novel recruit Nile ( KiKi Layne ) , who is soon torn between her sure-enough and new biography .
In the political campaign - up to the premiere , Rucka and Fernandez talk with Screen Rant about the process of turning their graphic novel into a motion-picture show as well as the inspiration behind their tale as sometime as time .
Did you always conceive of this story as a film ? Because it happened quite quickly after you cat put it out .
Greg Rucka : No , I certainly did n’t - but I never do . When I ’m writing a story , it is about the tarradiddle that I am doing and in in the medium that I am writing it in . I ’m still - and I write the darn screenplay , I ’m still mistily stunned that a movie is coming out .
And it ’s terrific .
Greg Rucka : I recall it ’s really good , but I ’m delighted you like it , human being . Because my opinion , frankly , does n’t count that much . I conceive Leo ’s take on it is different .
Leandro Fernandez : Yeah , since I was a little nestling , every single thing that I ’ve done , I ’ve done it imagine it ’s going to be taken to a movie . Even when I was four years former , that was the engine that maintain me working . But it was like a cycle and a biz of lie to myself to feel the emotion of pull strings people [ with ] my drawing and take on the movie . But no , actually after a time , I get the stimulation to go on drawing . But at the same time , I dwell to myself if I think that manner . So , I realized it and I said , " No , it ’s like a little game I ’m act as . "
But all of a sudden , there it was . They were making a movie of something we created . It was unbelievable ; it happened faster than I thought .
The art of the ledger is fantastic . At my local laughable computer memory , our shop owner was telling us how amazing the Holy Scripture is . I have to inquire , it seems there ’s a raft of influences and philosophies and element that are woven into this . What ’s the basis ? Where did the idea stemmed from ?
Greg Rucka : Well , the core estimate sort of fare out of this mythology of soldier who do n’t die , correct ? There ’s a Stan Ridgway birdcall called " Camouflage " , and there are all these mythologies in different militaries about ageless soldier . So , that was part of it .
And then I had had this idea for Andy for years , and all I really have it off at the start was that she was dotty , gaga one-time . Like , old on the exfoliation that if you really thought about it , you would be like , " Oh , wait , that ’s before people experience anything about people old " . We do n’t have intercourse about that diachronic period ; it ’s lose . This woman had been unable to expire and had come out of a warrior culture and had always been a warrior , and was the most deadly person in the history of all macrocosm as a result .
Because there was no artillery she had n’t mastered it . If she wanted to hear how to utilise a rifle , she can take three years and become an expert , proper ? There was nothing she could n’t do . And yet she would be always ultimately alone and always ultimately trail with this sorrowfulness and this gist of her years . The ideas came together , and hi , welcome to The Old Guard .
And then the other thing - and I ’ve been saying that a lot , but I ’ll lend that - the other thing that happen was my dad take place away . This is the affair , most of us are conk out to experience that . And most of us are going to find ourselves ask the question we take when we were three or four or five , which is , " Why do people have to die ? " And in some way , the first Old Guard story is trying to resolve that dubiousness ; is trying to say , " There is actually a merit to the end of a living . "
I ca n’t expect for this to be a sequel , and alsoQueen & Country !
Greg Rucka : queerly enough , Netflix has the rights to it .
