The Old Guard

But the conductor herself gives plentitude of credit to the cast , and Prince - Bythewood shared with Screen Rant why she matte up actors like Chiwetel Ejiofor and Charlize Theron were draw and quarter to the story of immortal warriors . She also revealed one of the toughest scenes to flash and how she acquire through it .

Can you blab out to me about how you assembled this cast of characters , specially Charlize and Chiwetel ? Amazing player in their own right , and awesome performance . How did you assemble such talent ?

Gina Prince - Bythewood : They say 70 % of directing is throw , and I really trust that you have to have the right citizenry in those use . And this was a tough one . first off , Greg created such great characters and such a great chronicle . That was utterly helpful , because actor like Matthias Schoenaerts , who does not do these character of motion picture - I sat across from him , and he says , " I do n’t do these character of films . But I have sex the story and I love this character . "

Having a really dope script was absolutely helpful . Knowing I wanted to make it feel whole grounded and existent , despite the fantastical vanity , was something that attracted a heap of the actors . I mean , Chiwetel . I got to shape with Chiwetel , you know what I intend ? What he brought to Copley and that fictitious character - every histrion that I got really elevated the characters in the story and the genre . And also I had to find multitude who not only were poop actors , but you could trust were , in Charlize ’s character , 6000 years old . Not that a lot of people can embody that character .

So , it was it was a lot of fun , but it was absolutely intentional to have just dope actors in the genre .

The pictorial novel ’s also beautifully illustrated . Can you babble out to me about what some of the tough elements to interpret from the page to the screen were ?

Gina Prince - Bythewood : Yeah , Leandro did a beautiful Book of Job . For me , I wanted to pay homage to some of it - and most specifically my use of silhouette in the photographic film was actually absolutely pulled from the book , and peculiarly the putting to death flooring . The kill floor is an iconic scene ; it go down the tonus . That was the view I was spooky about . You read it in the comedian , and you ’re like , " Oh my God . " But then it ’s like , " Okay , how do I make that tangible ? "

The Old Guardhas an interesting blend of mythology and fresh characters . Why did you resolve to take on this project , and what themes spoke to you ?

Gina Prince - Bythewood : Foremost , thematically , it was really two things . These characters were searching for their purpose . And I finger like that is something [ I ] as an creative person and a person absolutely at unlike times in my life have had been searching for . It experience like something an audience could connect to , despite the fantastical premiss .

And also just that thought process of : we have a modified time on Earth , so what are we going to do with our time ? I have a go at it that these character , they do n’t sleep together how long they have , but they ’re going to do good . And I loved putting that into the world . So thematically , those things dead connect me . The fact that there are two women at the capitulum of this locoweed action mechanism join , and that one is a unseasoned inglorious female , which we seldom get to see . That that was like , " Oh , yeah , man . "

I know that you were rumored to be directingSilver and Blackfor a while , and now I ’m hearing that it might be shift into a streaming television show . Are you still involved with the process ?

Gina Prince - Blythewood : Yeah , I will say I ’m involved as a producer , but the last two year I ’ve been MIA shoot The Old Guard . That ’s how long I ’ve been on this - which is I ’m so worked up that it ’s finally about to amount out , because I need a nap .

I love those characters . Silver Sable ’s a dope eccentric , [ and ] Black Cat . But it ’s kind of shift in what it ’s gon na be , so we ’re still trying to forecast that out .

One of the prospect that you had was a very sloshed scene in a plane . It was a fight scene between your actresses . That aspect was incredible , and it seemed so tightly choreographed . How hard was it shooting that scene ?

Gina Prince - Blythewood : It was very hard , but I made it hard on purpose . The DP Tami Reiker and I , we make up one’s mind , " You know what ? It take seat in the plane , in a bound space . I wanted to feel grounded and real . get ’s not give ourselves a crutch of flying walls . " We have to stay confined in that , and that made it arduous to spud . It determine how we could spud it in our Angle , but I felt like an sum to the urgency and the grounded - ness .

The other difficult matter is , it was a real plane on hydraulics . I detest to take flight . Deathly afraid of flying . Every metre those fluid mechanics take off , I would get that jolt of , " Oh my God , we ’re gon na dash . " So , I was always having to calm myself and then centre back on lead the picture .
