Screen Rant spoke with the multitalented star to celebrate the documentary ’s July 7 video recording on need premiere . Trejo spoke eloquently and passionately about the effect he hopes his storey will have , as well as what he want to see change in the police force .
The first affair I want to talk about is to permit your guard down and really open up . You ’re moderately straight-from-the-shoulder with your chronicle , but so are the people in your documentary . How were you approached to get this process begin and get a documentary about your life work ?
Danny Trejo : I was in Canada and the producers come on me about it . They were talking and wanted to see if I want to do it . by nature , I do n’t do anything without asking Gloria , so I say , “ Gloria , check this out . ” And she said , “ Let ’s do it . It ’s about prison term . ”
We wanted to do something that would give hope to people that were incarcerated , and other people that were just having a tough time . I remember Dennis Hopper once said , “ Danny , if you may make it , anybody can make it . ” And I thought that seemed to be the consensus around here , so we just did the documentary to see , and it ’s working out really , really well . I believe it ’s going to be slap-up in jejune hall , in early days authority , in the penitentiary , and even with people that are just get a bad time at work .
One of the things I assume away , which was a swelled part of your life , was your cousin Gilbert . As someone who has been through the prison arrangement , and in light of late effect , how do you think we can well promote rehabilitation ?
Danny Trejo : One of the thing we ’re doing is we passed a bill , and kids that were sentenced [ to life ] as juveniles can come up for parole now . We ’ve got 5 guys that did over 30 years each and in all probability went to gaol when they were 17 . You ’re a different person when you ’re 17 or 25 ; you ’re a different person . What we judge to say is we ’ve got to give these kids a 2nd chance , so we ’ve get about 5 or 6 guys that we ’re working with now that did about 30 years .
My cousin Gilbert was the first one , and we got him out . They did n’t want to allow him out because it set up a precedent . In fact , when we went to pick him up , they discharge him off on the main road . They did n’t even want us to get on the institutional grounds .
You ’ve got to understand that Department of Corrections spelled backwards is recidivism , because that ’s just what occur . Any business that has an 85 % nonstarter [ rate ] is like , “ Wait a minute ! This is n’t work ! ” I opine they said 10 % of all the the great unwashed in prison house belong in prison . The rest of them could be take fear of in convalescence houses , because drug are n’t a crime . They ’re an habituation that could use hospitalization insurance . There ’s a lot of ways to fix that ; not the Department of Corrections .
What lessons from your life history fib do you think are the most relevant for our current social and political climate ?
Danny Trejo : I think what we want to do with this docudrama was give hope , because adolescent foyer and youth office and the penitential are mean to take away hope – so that you do n’t have any Leslie Townes Hope . So that you put forward yourself to this way of life . “ This is what I do . ”
When you go through puerile hall – when you come out of jejune hall – you ’re ready to go back . They give you this probation policeman to verify you go back . You look at most of the people in prison , that go in prison , they start in puerile hall all the way up . There was no stopping point in the centre , and I remember that ’s what this is . The promise stopping gunpoint .
I want to switch power train , because I did n’t know you were such a big lover ofAnimal Crossing . Can you talk about what you ’re doing with it now ?
Danny Trejo : I started playing this Animal Crossing plot and get so hooked on it . I care it because there ’s no violence , it ’s just , “ Oh my God , I got ta trade wetback on my island . ” It ’s just so much fun grab oranges and apples and doing fishing , so I always run around the lake . We ’re just make so much playfulness with it , and so many mass comment that I ’m play it . I mean , people on the street : “ Hey , you ’re in Animal Crossing ! ”
It ’s kind of curious ; I ’m having a lot of play with it .
There is a lot start on in the media with police right now . Early on in your life , getting pulled over was unlike from how it is now . While now they may pull you over to get a motion picture , we ca n’t ignore that racial profiling is a thing . Can you talk about that ?
Danny Trejo : In any line of work – in anything – there ’s always some bad apples . What we have to do is have a defective Malus pumila weed-whacker - out . When you go to the penitential , they have a psychological trial that form of tells you who ’s a racist or who ’s this . you’re able to literally find out whether you like gay people or not with this .
I intend the law is the only formation where all they need to link up is a high school diploma ; you may get a high school sheepskin and go in good order to the police department . The police that I really have it away , and that I like and are really sound to me , are guys that have take psychology on their own , sociology . They ’ve learned how to work with autistic multitude ; determine how to work with bipolar [ people ] . These guy cable are on top ; they know . They know you do n’t come on an autistic person assay to reach control . You ’ve got to go , “ Hey , restrain on . ” There ’s ways to it .
The large problem that we have is that the police force are trained to get control . And sometimes , if you ’re deal with somebody have intercourse their mind against the rampart , you ’re not going to get mastery . You ’ve got to figure out a way to check him from doing that .
Once you get the bad orchard apple tree out – because there ’s no way that we can be without a police department ; there ’s no way . But we ’ve got to have a citizen ’s group , or somebody that check out new recruits . “ Wait a minute , keep this hombre at a desk . ” That ’s just the path it is .
In these protests , nobody got arrested between the hours of 10 am and 5 Prime Minister . hoi polloi van loads of masses from out of town ; people start arrive to riot . It ’s like , “ await a minute . ” We ’ve get to be able to start doing that . What protests have to start doing is policing themselves . “ Nobody ’s throwing careen . If you are , get out of here .
