Every Hero of Alexandria must have a foil , and inEurovision Song Contest : The Story of Fire Sagathat purpose is fill by Dan Stevens . His type , Alexander Lemtov , is everything that Will Ferrell ’s Lars bid he could be . You play the antagonist in the film , Alexander . Can you let the cat out of the bag to me about what is motivating Alexander the Isaac M. Singer ?
Dan Stevens : That ’s an interesting question . I mean , he initially looks like he ’s a sort of rival to Lars , and someone who ’s gon na bankrupt up the band and take Sigrit aside . In Lar ’s eyes , Lemtov really represents everything that he wants to be . You fuck , Lars has dreamed of being a prince of Eurovision since he was a small fry , so Lemtov really represents that for him .
But as we get further into the story , and further into Lemtov and Sigrit ’s story , we realize that it ’s not as clearly - cut as that , and that Lemtov has some interesting motivation for require Sigrit . by his side . He has a vaguely tragic floor underlying it all - which makes for , I opine , a more interesting story .
Are you familiar with Eurovision ?
Dan Stevens : Very much so . Yeah , I produce up in the UK . Growing up in Europe , you just know what Eurovision is . But it ’s really funny to me to come across grown - up Americans who are just come to terms with the fact that it live . It ’s amazing , and I bonk that . I ca n’t think what it must be like to go your whole life and then suddenly be tell that there ’s this truly bizarre matter that happens every class .
It kind of dare explanation , really . You just have to find out our movie and then disappear down some YouTube wormholes to really explore the full glory of Eurovision .
That ’s where I find oneself myself last Nox , down those Eurovision wormholes . If you had to choose a song to sing in Eurovision as Dan Stevens , what would that Sung be ?
Dan Stevens : Oh my goodness . I mean , I ’d have to test " Line of Love " and see how that make out alongside some substantial unity . It ’s a blaze of a catchy song . The whole cast and crowd was peach it for weeks afterwards . There ’s a circle of tricky tunes in this moving picture .
There actually are a mess of catchy tunes in this pic . I just recently see you in The Rental at a drive - in motion-picture show theater . That was an awesome experience . You ’ve been choosing a mountain of different roles as of late . Can you talk to me about what drew you to playing such a whimsical character in this film ?
Dan Stevens : Well , I think , part of it was obviously father the chance to work on with Will , who ’s a existent comedic hero of mine , in a melodious clowning . I ’ve you live , really enjoyed getting more into musicals and comedies in recent class . It was a combining of that , and then they play me the song " Line of Love " and I could n’t refuse . It was too good to pass up .
Did you get to keep any of your costume from the shoot ? Those are pretty amazing as well .
Dan Stevens : The only thing I hang onto was Lemtov ’s rhomb spike stud .
honest pick . Correct me if I ’m wrong , but it seemed like you guys were shoot down at the Highclere castle - the Downton Abbey castle .
Dan Stevens : It look a lot like it . It ’s in reality Knebworth castle , which is just northerly of London . But it ’s a very interchangeable kind of style ; that form of high Victorian , really opulent plaza that Lemtov inexplicably owns . I remember he sound out it ’s , like , one of his top five houses .
