Auli’i Cravalho : Absolutely . I really connected to my character reference , Amber , from the get - go . I think she is so affirmative , in that she ’s a slap-up friend and puzzle out so intemperately in schoolhouse . She has such amazing passions and require to pursue higher education and go for her pipe dream college of Carnegie Mellon . All of these awe-inspiring things . She ’s such a multifaceted character reference and individual , and it ’s perfectly juxtapose with such an interesting and unsound home life . The fact that she is experiencing puerility homelessness , and she ’s in a single - parent menage with a female parent that has some addiction effect .

I really appreciate it this film for its realness , and I recollect it ’s beautiful that we show that on screen .

One of the most heartbreaking yet material relationship was Amber ’s relationship with their mama . Can you talk to me about that relationship a fiddling moment ?

Auli’i Cravalho in All Together Now

Auli’i Cravalho : I maturate up in a single - parent household with just my mom and myself , so puzzle out with Justina was really , really special . She felt like a mom , you bonk ? That motherly love and that mother - girl kinship is so specific , and I can speak for myself on that . We do it how to press each other ’s clitoris and we sleep together each other so so well . I think the overpowering belief is that it ’s the two of us against the world . It ’s Amber ’s mother and her , it ’s only the two of them leave - and the little hound Tintin .

So much of the onus fall to Amber to be the arrant daughter , and to still be the outgoing student that she is and to keep everything in its seat and to ensure that she does n’t seem mussy to anyone . It ’s so unmanageable to be vulnerable , even with those secretive to us . So , I really appreciated that family relationship that we showed on screen , because I see with my own mother and I.

You deal a pile of shot with Fred Armisen , who is one of SNL ’s greatest improv schoolmaster . What are some of your funniest mo on set and what did you get to learn from him ?

Amber outside of school buses with her hands in jacket pockets in All Together Now on Netflix

Auli’i Cravalho : Yeah , Fred Armisen was a joyousness to work with . He is funny and genial and down to worldly concern . I honestly ca n’t even say if the blood line that he said were write down , or if he just come up with them on the fly ball . I think it was an even mix of both . He ’s just so quick , so it ’s really great to see him work .

I think one of my preferred things that he suppose was when Rhenzy Feliz [ was play ] the guitar . He ’s kind of still in a eruditeness point , and Fred Armisen is as well . He said , " You do n’t have to be awful at everything you do . Just start is really honorable enough . " And that , I think , will always adhere with me . Because I ’m the character of person where , if I ’m not unspoilt at it within a reasonable amount of time - say , an hour - I ’m not gon na keep doing it . It was a good deterrent in . I ’m like , " Oh , yeah . Practice does n’t have to make pure . recitation can just be enjoy the practice . "

You ’ve obviously played a larger than living grapheme inMoana , but this is a project that ’s much more grounded . What are some of the challenges that add up along with that ?

All Together Now

Auli’i Cravalho : I ’m thankful that I got my starting line with Moana . I was 14 when I was cast the celluloid and 16 when the film came out . It was voice acting and singing , and it really changed my liveliness and my career . I then got to work on NBC ’s Rise , where I played Lilette , who is another strong - minded and beautiful untested adult female . And now I get to act as Amber , who is so gifted and holds so much joyfulness in her heart while still overcome so many challenges . So , I really appreciated what these character bring me .

This role was vastly different than any role I ’ve played before . It ’s my first movie , so my typeface is in every conniption - which was brass - wrenching , for sure . I really enjoyed the challenge . I really apprise our director Brett Haley , and really all of the cast and crew , for creating an environment where I was able to be vulnerable .

Working with Brett was really particular , because he ’s such a collaborative director . He reserve me to ask questions , and then when I knew who Amber was , and Amber and I kind of became one , he would ask me if billet felt proper . And if they did n’t , he say the darndest things . He say , " Do n’t go to the line until you ’re quick . If the melodic phrase does n’t make sense , do n’t say it . If you have something that feels better , then do that or else . " And I commemorate looking at him , being like , " Who are you ? Kind of blessing angel or director can you be ? "

And it was really true , because he wanted to make a film that felt real . After a while , Amber and I really got to fuck each other quite well . So he figured , " Who well to ask than you ? " And I really , really apprize that .

You get the chance to use your powerful voice in this film . Can you mouth about the process of couch music together with Brett and his composer ?

Auli’i Cravalho : Of course of instruction . The composer , Keegan DeWitt , and Brett Haley and I , we all work together on the Sung dynasty " experience Like menage . " I think that we met up for the first time to plug on the keys and cipher out what it was go to sound like , and Keegan sit down at the piano and was like , " What tonality do you want this to be in ? " And I was like , " Wait , I get to choose that ? I ’m gloomy , I do n’t know anything about keys , Can we start from the beginning ? "

It was very significant that the lyrics felt real , because it really connects Amber to her father . And the Sung also unite her to her future , in want to go after higher teaching and go to her dreaming college of Carnegie Mellon . So , it ’s a really important song that comes also at a really dear time . Amber babble out it in front of Ty , who is this really great protagonist that might be something more , and she allow herself to be vulnerable in front of him . It ’s a really touching second .

The vocal was very of import , and it ’s also beautifully minimise . We experience how of import the call is for her , but she also has so many other passions . The song form of press her towards her dream , but it is n’t the only affair that we that we comment about her .

This film also have a license Hollywood legend , Carol Burnett . Can you peach about what you were capable to absorb from her while she was on set ?

Auli’i Cravalho : Absolutely . Yes , I can . Carol Burnett is a ambition . She really , really is . My mom watched The Carol Burnett Show , whereas I have it away her from Annie , where she playact Miss Hannigan . That ’s the character that I really knew ; Annie was one of my pet musicals rise up .

We were shooting one of the scenes , and I have to shout in front of her . I would get into character , and I ’m like , " My eccentric is quick . " And then I would look into her oculus , and the crying that had materialized just evaporated . I ’m like , " Why am I cry out in front of Carol Burnett ? " I ’m ride right next to her , she smell in force , she ’s beautiful . She ’s this Hollywood fable . It would pull me out of characters so prompt . We must have done the scene an exhausting amount of times .

Brett and I made center inter-group communication , and I was like , " Look , dude , I ’m judge my best . You put me in front of a Hollywood caption . I need a few more takes . " And he was like , Alright , kid . I empathise . " I really appreciate it .

But she ’s so tolerant . She asked all the epithet of everyone in plaster cast and crew and introduced herself . Her performing is just - if I can say perfect , I ’ll habituate the word perfect . She does n’t push any of her line of credit . She ’s so comfortable and elegant in her skin . And she really brought the role of Joan , and Joan ’s hard love , to life .

Brett really managed to bewitch the joyfulness and the confusion of youth . Can you talk to me a little bit more about his directing style ? It seems he really trusted his thespian .

Auli’i Cravalho : Yeah , I ’m surprised at how much he trusted me , actually . I was like , " Wow , I imagine I know my reference . But now you ’re enquire me questions like I ’m the expert . " Usually on project that I ’ve worked on , I work really heavily on the character and who I am and the setting . Where I ’m coming from in a tantrum and blah blah fustian - all that actory stuff . But Brett was actually really helpful , in that everything was a conversation .

The real connexion between each and every one of the characters was what was most important . Our mold is so beautiful and so special , and we ’re all really swell friends . We ’re also otherwise abled and non - neurotypical and multitude of colour , and I call up it was really authoritative for Brett to see a cast that he would see in real life . So , I ’m really proud of the photographic film that we ’ve made and lofty of my costars as well .

Disney has been make a live - military action killing with their adaptation of classics . Moanaseems like such a innate fit for that . Do you want to play Moana in a live - action pic ?

Auli’i Cravalho : Ooh , what a interrogative . I palpate really blessed that I was able to give Moana her voice , and I would utterly love to voice her again . I do n’t sleep together what ’s in the cards from Mona , though . I ’m not 16 anymore . Our photographic film really came out November 23 , 2016 , the day after my 16th birthday . Moana was 16 in the moving picture , so it feel very serendipitous . I had a very sweet 16 ; I was travel the worldly concern elevate the movie , and it ’s a time in my life that I ’ll never forget .

But like I said , I think representation in casting is really very of import . So , I call up we could find a Moana that could also do her a fate of justice . There are so many wonderful young Hawaiian and Polynesian actors and actresses out there . Really , the options are endless . There ’s so many gifted people that could try out and potentially get the use .

You have several mentors give you advice in the film , and each performing artist affects you in a different way . Can you peach to me about all of Amber ’s unlike mentors on and off screen form her ?

Auli’i Cravalho : Sure . give thanks you for take that up . Fred Armisen play Mr. Franks , who is a really wonderful and uproarious drama teacher that I reckon any drama kid can really relate to . He is so supportive of Amber ’s ambition and wanting her to pursue the fact that she ’s a performing artist . She ’s an actor and she has such a rage for the artistic creation , and I call back we all have had some type of instructor that has pushed us towards the path of whatever greatness we make up one’s mind to be .

There ’s also Justina Machado , who plays Amber ’s mom , and she fetch such a beautiful warmth and love . Like I said , it ’s the two of them against the world , so that mother - girl relationship is also really important for Amber . There ’s also Judy Reyes , who play one of Amber ’s good Quaker ’s female parent . She also has a beautiful connection with Amber , and she has to kind of draw that line of reasoning because she is n’t her female parent but she loves her like one . So , that ’s really interesting to see .

There ’s also Rhenzy Feliz , who play Ty . He ’s a really outstanding friend of Amber ’s , and peradventure a minuscule bit something more . I always call up of Ty as her quiet voice of reason , because he ’s a good man and he does n’t really splash around too much . He tries not to be a burden on her , but he hump that she ’s stubborn . When she wo n’t listen to anyone else , he experience that that hopefully he can get through to her .

Yes , absolutely . There are so many beautiful relationships in this plastic film that makes Amber the genial , open - hearted hero that she really is .
